Portrait of Alexis Alexis Wilson and her husband, Rod White Eagle Wilson, a member of the Cherokee nation, are recent transplants to South Dakota having spent the past 35 years traveling and working in Europe, East Africa, New Zealand and the Islands of the Pacific.

After spending eight years in the nation of Kenya and then moving to the Hawaiian Islands Alexis began to pursue her art career full time. During this time she helped to found the Fine Arts Department at the University of the Nations in Kailua-Kona which eventually led to her taking art students on field assignments into Mainland China in 1988, 1989, and 1992, and to Guatemala in 1994.

For many years Alexis’s art was mostly of a tropical motif. It was while living in New Zealand and learning of the Maori culture that her work began to take on more of an indigenous theme.

Today her art seeks to honor the host people of North America by celebrating the richness of Native American culture in expressing the ordinary insights of their everyday life and simple joys as well as their traditions.

An award winning artist, Alexis’ art is displayed in galleries and private collections in many nations of the world. Alexis is a fulltime artist as well as an instructor.
